Composer

The Resume

    (March 18, 1911-February 20, 1971)
    Born in Saint-Paul, Minnesota
Works include WWII war department documentaries, Republic Pictures, Looney Tunes (60s) and animated United Artists shorts (early to mid-60s)
TV scores include Cheyenne (1955), Bonanza, Rawhide, F Troop, classic Twilight Zone, and incidentals and themes for Mickey Mouse Club serials and Disneyland programs

Why he might be annoying:

His career at Warner Brothers actually began a lot earlier — he didn’t receive screen credits for his earliest musical arrangements, in the 1930s (he returned in 1941).
Most of his works in the 40s and 50s were – regardless of genre – B-movies.
It wasn’t until Milt Franklyn died in 1962 – having completed only the first two minutes of the score for ‘The Jet Cage’ – that he became the main Looney Tunes scorer (his first full score was ‘Good Noose’).
His atonal tension-packed scoring style ran in stark contrast to Carl Stalling’s tendency to use song snippets as visual puns.
His last film work was an independent monster vs. monster horror film.

Why he might not be annoying:

While he was studying at Northwestern – where he edited their commerce magazine and student newspaper – he worked as a railroad clerk.
Given the era in which he joined the Looney Tunes lot, he was forced to work with a much smaller orchestra and budget than he was accustomed to.
Along with a few dozen other composers, he resigned from the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1967 — over the academy’s rejection of that year’s Emmy award nominations.
He was an anti-Communist who supported direct military action against the Fidel Castro empire.
Though not in the Golden Age of Animation, he has the distinction of being the last composer in the classic Looney Tunes era.
