Why he might be annoying:

He allegedly ordered troops to fire on striking workers (1970).
In an attempt to hamper the progress of the trade union Solidarity, he imposed martial law in Poland, outlawed the union and imprisoned its leaders (1981).
He called himself head of the ‘Commission for National Salvation’ when he said that martial law was imposed in case of a Soviet attack.
He was involved in the 1968 Invasion of Czechoslovakia.
He was better at cracking down on dissent than strengthening the Polish economy.
Some Poles called him a ‘little short of a traitor’ for allying with the Soviets, who seized the eastern half of Poland and deported him to the USSR.
He used his supposedly poor health as an excuse of not going to trial.

Why he might not be annoying:

He, his parents and a million of their fellow Poles were deported into the former Soviet Union after the Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland (1939).
He became an orphan while performing forced labor in the coal mines of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, which damaged his eyes and back for life.
He fought to liberate Poland from the Nazis.
At first, he wanted to join the non-Soviet controlled Polish resistance army led by Władysław Anders, but was forced to join the Soviet-controlled First Polish Army instead (1943).
He apologized for the 1968 Invasion of Czechoslovakia as a mistake (2005).
He later accepted the failure of communism (2001).
