    54th largest city in the United States; Colorado's third most populous city (as of 2012)
    Formerly known as Fletcher (1891-1929)
    Located adjacent to Colorado's state capital and largest city, Denver
    Nicknamed 'The Gateway to the Rockies' and 'The Sunrise of Colorado'
    When founder Donald Fletcher abandoned the town in response to the Silver Crash of 1893, the town faced a huge water debt.
    Like Colorado Springs, the city has a large military and defense industry presence.
    Despite being larger in area than Denver, much of Aurora is underdeveloped.
    It is located within three counties.
    James Egan Holmes murdered 12 people and injured 58 others in a brutal shooting spree at a movie theater located within the city (July 20, 2012).
    The city has a large collection of skyscrapers.
    In 2004, the city was designated by 'Sports Illustrated' as one of 50 'sportstowns' for its exemplary involvement in facilitating and enhancing sports.
    It is home to the University of Colorado at Denver's Anschutz Medical Campus.
    It is home to golf courses and museums.
    Actor Tim Allen and 2004 US presidential candidate John Kerry are natives of Aurora.
