The Resume

    (1970- )
    Born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Moved to Vietnam (October 1979) and then to Thailand (February 1980)
Moved to the United States with her oldest brother Meng and his wife Eang (June 1980)
Wrote the memoirs ‘First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers’ (2000) and ‘Lucky Child: A Daughter of Cambodia Reunites with the Sister She Left Behind’ (2005)
Worked for the anti-landmine organization International Campaign to Ban Landmines (1997-2003)
Topics regarding her activism include Cambodia, women in war, land mines, domestic violence, and use of child soldiers

Why she might be annoying:

Her exact birth date is unknown because the Khmer Rouge destroyed many birth records in Cambodian cities.
She was trained as a child soldier.
Her first memoir has been criticized for inaccuracy because she was still a child during the events in Cambodia, so she couldn’t exactly have given accurate accounts of her experiences.
Other reasons for the criticism of the book are purported misrepresentations of ethnic Khmers and life in Cambodia during the 1970s.
She nearly committed suicide when suffering from loneliness and sadness during the first six years of her life in the United States.

Why she might not be annoying:

She survived Pol Pot’s reign of terror and the subsequent war she witnessed in the refugee camps throughout her early life in Cambodia.
Her older sister died from food poisoning when doing hard labor.
She subsequently lost her parents and her youngest sister to the genocide, as they were never seen again.
She was often separated from her surviving siblings during much of the Khmer Rouge’s reign.
Her first memoir won the Asian/Pacific American Librarians’ Association award for ‘Excellence in Adult Non-fiction Literature’ (2001).
