    Chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC)
    Became head of the South African Communist Party (1991)
    Assassinated outside his home

Why he might be annoying:

    He went to the Soviet Union for military training.
    As head of the MK, he oversaw a bombing campaign in South Africa that killed over 60 people.
    He appealed to militants who felt that Nelson Mandela was too concilatory toward whites.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Upon returning from exile, he called for an end of violence against white civilians (1990).
    He was the most popular ANC leader after Nelson Mandela.
    His assassination by two right-wing extremists galvanized the white government and the ANC into accelerating the negotiations that produced multiracial elections a year later.
    He said, 'I want to live in a free South Africa, even if I have to lay down my life for it.'
