Why she might be annoying
She was one of 10 children.
While unmarried, she became pregnant from store clerk George C. Houghton, who arranged for her to have a $50 abortion.
She refused, thinking he'd marry her.
When he didn't, she was forced to go to a disreputable 'lying-in' hospital to give birth and arrange an adoption.
Why she might not be annoying
Due to the deplorable conditions of the medical center, she developed a fatal infection.
The attending medical student begged her for her real name, so he could inform her parents she was dying.
Her baby was adopted without records.
Her death led to more stringent regulations of women's clinics.
She's an example of what can happen when a woman had little autonomy over reproductive choices.
