    Portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis in the film 'My Left Foot' (1989)
    He was one of 22 children (13 of whom survived infancy).
    He stopped attending a clinic specializing in treating cerebral palsy because he felt uncomfortable.
    His speech was difficult to understand.
    He had a ten-year affair with a married woman.
    He was described as living his later years in 'an angry, alcoholic haze.'
    He was mistakenly diagnosed as mentally retarded until age five, when he grabbed a piece of chalk with his left foot to write on the floor.
    He was close to his brothers, who included him in their activities as much as possible.
    At age 12, he won a painting contest sponsored by the Sunday Independent.
    According to a biography (2007), his wife had numerous affairs and neglected him.
    Dublin gravediggers broke their strike to bury him.
