Outlaw

The Resume

    (March 25, 1934- )
Born in Petersdorf, Thuringen, Nordhausen , Germany
Served as a fundraiser for West Germany’s Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union, while Helmut Kohl was chancellor
Figure in Canada’s Airbus affair and ethics probe of Brian Mulroney
Deported from Canada to Germany (August 2, 2009)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was an arms dealer.
Rightfully fearing the tough laws of his native land, he successfully battled several extradition attempts over the course of a decade.
Ironically, he was a key figure in Mulroney’s ascent to power — even going so far as to undermine a leadership convention to benefit Joe Clark.
He called his extradition ‘the biggest political justice scandal in history’ (‘the whole approach here is to get my mouth shut and to get me out of the country’).

Why he might not be annoying:

He became a legal citizen of Canada in 1982.
His first business venture involved the import of carpeting from Iran.
His lawyer was able to grant him a stay of extradition through a rarely-used proviso (October 2007).
If nothing else, he left a strong stain on Mulroney’s reputation.
