Why they might be annoying:

The band's name is really unimaginative.
During the 1970s, there was a joke: 'How do you spell pretentious?' Answer: 'E-L-P.'
Greg Lake insisted on performing onstage while standing on a Persian carpet.
Emerson and Lake reunited with drummer Cozy Powell (name starts with a P--get it?).

Why they might not be annoying:

They sold millions of records, even though rock critics hated them.
They all came from other bands, like the Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster.
Greg Lake played with Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band.
