    Born in Elbeuf, France
Birth name was Emile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog

He put off his literary ambitions for over a decade to run the family cloth factory.
He used a pseudonym because of worries that his first novel, inspired by his experiences as liaison to the British army in WWI, might be considered insulting to the English.
His first biography, 'Ariel' about Shelley, was panned by critics for its inaccuracy.
He made sure to carefully research his later biographies, with the Times of London declaring, 'M. Andre Maurois is the greatest living biographer. He is objective, subtle, truthful, painstaking and he has the flair of a true biographer.'
He was one of the first prominent figures in France to warn against the British and French policy of appeasement towards Adolf Hitler.
He served with the Free French forces in World War II.
He said of his prolific output, 'The job of a writer is to write.'
