Why he might be annoying:

He rejected an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court (1922).
He received over ten honorary doctorates.
He opposed woman's suffrage, child labor laws, legislation against lynching, and most civil rights programs.
Despite proclaiming himself a staunch Democrat, he opposed Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs.
He lost his presidential bid to Calvin Coolidge, who had never even left his house to campaign.
He unsuccessfully defended school segregation in the Supreme Court case of 'Brown vs. the Board of Education' (1955).

Why he might not be annoying:

He spoke out against the Ku Klux Klan.
He argued nearly 140 cases before the Supreme Court during his life, a record at that time.
He was one of the authors of the Clayton Antitrust Act, which limited the formation and power of corporate monopolies.
During World War I, he served as delegate to Germany, negotiating the release and exchange of POWs.
As solicitor general, he defended the voting rights of African Americans.
