He fathered a child out of wedlock at only sixteen.
As a child, he sang on the streets for money with his father and brothers.
He refused to play the trumpet, fearing it would mess up his lips.
Why he might not be annoying
Just one year before his death, he was part of an all-star sextet led by Benny Goodman, and included Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
He brought the electric guitar to the foreground as a lead instrument, as opposed to part of the rhythm section.
In 1966, he was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame.
Oklahoma City named a street and held a yearly jazz festival in his honor.
