    When colleges began recruiting him because of his athletic prowess, he had to attend summer school to earn enough credits to enroll.
    He was uncomfortable with fame, claiming that he had never read any article written about him.
    He was estranged from the children of his first marriage, including refusing to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was the first man to win three gold medals in track and field since Jesse Owens in 1936.
    He was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year.
    He was honored as one of nine ‘Great Living Americans’ by the United States Chamber of Commerce.
    He turned down an offer to endorse Newport Cigarettes.
