Why he might be annoying:

He changed his ordination name from Michael to Mychal.
He was an alcoholic.
After friends revealed that he was gay (but celibate), the website catholic.org claimed 'homosexual activists' were turning Judge into a 'homosexual icon' to 'attack the Catholic Church.'

Why he might not be annoying:

Because his father was too sick to work, he shined shoes at Penn Station as a child.
After becoming sober with the support of Alcoholics Anonymous (1978), he shared his personal struggle to help others dealing with addiction.
In addition to firefighters and their families, he ministered to the homeless and AIDS victims.
He died just after administering last rites to a mortally wounded firefighter.
When the Vatican considered barring even celibate gay men from being priests, Andrew Sullivan ran a picture of Father Judge's body being carried from Ground Zero by firefighters under the sardonic headline 'Unfit for the Priesthood.'
He said, 'If no one told you today that they love you, let me tell you: I love you, and no matter what mess you're in, you're always loved by God.'
