Baseball Player

The Resume

    (July 19, 1916-December 18, 2010)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
First baseman/outfielder for the Chicago Cubs (1934-53) and Chicago White Sox (1954-55)
    Player/manager for the Cubs (1951-53)
    Career batting average of .293
    1,977 hits
    920 RBIs
    Four-time All-Star (1944-47)
    National League MVP (1945)
Last surviving player to have played against Babe Ruth in a Major League game

Why he might be annoying:

During his first World Series, his batting average was an anemic .125 (1935).
He lost hefty chunks of playing time in 1939-40 when he twice broke an ankle while sliding.
He had a losing record as a manager (169-213).
He was fired during spring training by Phil Wrigley for defeatism after admitting the Cubs were unlikely to finish better than fifth place (1954).

Why he might not be annoying:

He hit for the cycle in his first minor league game.
In his other two World Series appearances, he hit for .462 (1938) and .423 (1945).
In addition to firing him, Wrigley, in a fit of pique, also cancelled the ceremony at which his #44 was to have been retired.
Pitcher Johnny Klippstein said, 'He was as gung-ho about winning as a player could be. He’d want to win at all costs and he didn’t care if we were behind, 10-0.'
