    (March 1963- )
    Born in Quebec, Canada
Full name is Front de Libération du Quebec
Aim was to establish an independent, socialist Quebec through terrorism if necessary
Loosely connected group of terrorist cells based in Montreal
    Mainly active between 1963-71
Members include Raymond Villeneuve, Pierre Vallières, Jacques Lanctôt and Réjean Tremblay
It was involved in over 200 bombings, mainly directed at Quebec’s Anglophone minority and the government.
It killed at least five people and injured many more.
It kidnapped Pierre Laporte, a Quebec politician and James Cross, a British diplomat. Laporte was later found murdered (October 1970).
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau responded by imposing martial law on Quebec.
One cell plotted to blow up the Statue of Liberty.
Members charged with terrorist acts who fled Canada often received light sentences when they returned.
The few remaining members sometimes target Quebec businesses that use English on their signs.
It grew out of historical injustices and exploitation in Quebec.
It was inspired by revolutionary movements in Cuba, Algeria and Vietnam.
It was popular with university students and academics.
Public support largely dried up after Laporte’s murder.
One member, Jean Corbo, accidentally blew himself up.
Workers could be fired for supporting the FLQ.
Some members eventually renounced its violent means and joined the more moderate Parti Québécois.
