Musicians
    (1963-1971)
    Born in Los Angeles, California
    Line up in 1967:
    Howard Kaylan (June 22, 1947- ), vocals
    Mark Volman (April 19, 1947- ), vocals
    Jim Tucker (October 17, 1946- ), guitar
Jim Pons (March 14, 1943- ), bass guitar
    John Barbata (April 1, 1945- ), drums
Recorded the singles 'It Ain't Me Babe' (1965), 'Let Me Be' (1965), 'You Baby' (1966), 'Happy Together' (1967), 'She'd Rather Be with Me' (1967), 'You Know What I Mean' (1967), 'She's My Girl' (1967), 'Elenore' (1968) and 'You Showed Me' (1969)
They originally planned to call themselves the Tyrtles, ala the Byrds.
Between mid-1966 and mid-1967, they went through three bassists and three drummers.
Two of their biggest hits, 'Happy Together' and 'Elenore,' were meant as parodies of love songs.
After the band broke up, Kaylan and Volman recorded as The Phlorescent Leech and Eddie and later as Flo and Eddie.
'Happy Together' was used in ads for Golden Grahams, Super Smash Brothers and Twix.
They recorded early songs by Warren Zevon.
For their album 'The Battle of the Bands,' they imitated eleven bands playing different musical genres.
Kaylan and Volman resisted record company demands that they replace the rest of the Turtles with session musicians.
After the band broke up, Barbata worked with Crosby, Stills and Nash and the Jefferson Airplane/Starship, and Pons joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention.
Kaylan and Volman recorded backing vocals for Zappa, T. Rex and Bruce Springsteen, among others.
