    Character actor who appeared in several comedies in the 1920's, 30's, and 40's
    Appeared opposite Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and the Three Stooges
    His characters are often blustery and pompous.
    He was a Christian Scientist.
    In 1944, he developed an infection that he refused to treat. The infection turned gangrenous and may have triggered the heart attack that claimed his life.
    He was an extremely talented actor who could play a broad range of roles.
    He played several memorable roles opposite some of comedy's biggest stars.
    He made a smooth transition from silent movies to talkies.
    He possessed a wonderful tenor voice and sometimes participated in off-camera barbershop quartets with fellow actors.
