    Appeared in TV shows ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ (1962-65), ‘Gunsmoke’ (1963-64), ‘Peyton Place’ (1965) and ‘Wonder Woman’ (1977)
    He worked as a magician’s assistant as a child.
    He became typecast as a clueless nice guy.
    He was often eclipsed by his leading ladies.
    His hair went grey when he was very young.
    His final film was the abysmal ‘Billy Jack Goes to Washington’ (1977).
    He founded a theater company in the 1930s.
    Never a huge star, his show business career nevertheless lasted nearly 50 years.
    He joined the United States Air Force at 37 and appeared in training films.
    His friend and costar Margaret Sullavan committed suicide shortly after their play ‘Sweet Love Remembered’ opened.
    His wife survived him by less than a year.
