Baseball Player

The Resume

    (March 8, 1939-July 10, 2019)
Pitched for several teams, including New York Yankees (1962-1970, 1978)
    1963 All-Star
Wrote several books, including 'Ball Four' and 'Glad You Didn't Take it Personally'
    Invented Big League Chew gum

Why he might be annoying:

    He is divorced.
He only had 2 solid seasons.
He was banned from the New York Yankees Old Timer's Games for about 30 years for writing 'Ball Four.'
He sells autographed baseballs on his web site for $30.
He spread DMSO (a drug used for horses) on his shoulder before games.
The gum he invented is packaged like chewing tobacco.
Most baseball players held a grudge against him for revealing things they wished to keep private.
He changed the perception fans had of their baseball heroes.
Some of the things he wrote about caused many baseball wives to find out exactly what their husbands were doing on road trips (he named names).
When he was a local sportscaster for WCBS, he was snubbed by most ball players and Thurmon Munson went as far as to threaten him.

Why he might not be annoying:

He answers questions on his web site.
He made a comeback in the late 70s, giving up a TV career and even spending 2 years in the minors to earn his spot.
He was the only baseball player to win on the New York City TV Show 'Bottlecap Baseball.'
In his books, he gave some insightful, insider info on baseball.
He was extremely honest and open, even revealing that the year he won 20 games, he made only $7,000 and he had to negotiate to get $9,000 the next year.
Former Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn tried to get him to sign a statement that his books were fiction, which he refused to sign.
Big League Chew has helped slow down the usage of chewing tobacco in dugouts.
When baseball great Thurmon Munson died, he covered the Yankee tribute and became real emotional, even saying how much he admired and respected Thurmon, and how much it hurt knowing Thurmon despised him.
