    Plays include 'Eli: A Mystery Play of the Sufferings of Israel' (1951) and 'Signs in the Sand' (1960)
    Co-recipient with Shmuel Yosef Agnon of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1966)
    She was sheltered by overprotective parents.
    She suffered repeated nervous breakdowns, characterized by hallucinations and paranoia.
    She would see vapor trails in the sky and be convinced the planes were spying on her.
    She asked that her happier pre-WWII poems not be republished.
    She and her mother escaped Nazi Germany on a flight to Sweden one week before they were to report to a labor camp.
    Her first boyfriend died in a concentration camp.
    She continued to write even while hospitalized.
    Accepting the German Publishers' Peace Prize (1965), she said, 'In spite of the horrors of the past, I believe in you.'
