He was typecast as juvenile delinquents early in his career.
Tab Hunter claimed to have had a romantic fling with him in his autobiography.
He said: 'Those early movies made me somewhat of a teen icon . . . Kids in those days enjoyed defying authority. I never really enjoyed going out on the town much, I didn't drink and smoked only occasionally. The studios in those days wanted their stars to act on and off the screen. As I was a rebel on-screen I had to behave like one off-screen.'
Despite having a decades long career on the stage, television, and in film, he is only remembered for his single episode stint as Keeve Falor on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

He was a founding member of the Theatre West in Los Angeles.
His a half-sister and two half-brothers (Claudia, Robert, and Dean) formed the grunge band Stone Temple Pilots.
He briefly dated Natalie Wood, with whom he remained a lifelong friend.

He received acclaim for his performance at the Chicago Civic Theatre in a production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman.
