Why he might be annoying:

As a boy, he and a friend blew up a cat (and the woodshed it hid under) with dynamite. (In fairness, they had been asked to kill the cat and apparently felt instant vaporization would be the most humane way to go.)
He played semi-pro football under the name Jeremiah Schwartz, which was often erroneously reported to be his real name.
He had a high-pitched, raspy voice.
He told several different stories about how he got his voice. (The most common one was that he was running around with a curtain rod in his mouth when he tripped and fell, causing the rod to pierce the roof of his mouth.)
He provieded the voice of Cornelius the Rooster in several commercials for Kellogg's Corn Flakes.

Why he might not be annoying:

John Ford cast him as the driver in 'Stagecoach' because he had actual experience handling a six-horse team.
He was an avid pilot and owned a flying school that trained military pilots during WWII.
John Wayne and James Stewart attended his funeral.
He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for his work in radio and TV.
He is mentioned in Jimmy Buffett's song 'Pencil Thin Mustache.'
