    He briefly considered membership with the Communist Party after making friends with partisans in Yugoslavia during his service to the OSS in World War II.
    He held himself in contempt for ratting out communist ties to the House Un-American Activities Committee when he was forced to testify.
    He defied a court order not to sail to Tahiti with his children following his divorce.
    He married the same woman three times.
    He describes his film roles, 'Bastards, most of them, conceived in contempt of life and spewn out onto screens across the world with noxious ballyhoo; saying nothing, contemptuous of the truth, sullen, and lecherous.'
    He was in many westerns in the 1950's, being typecast as a poor man's John Wayne.
    He was cast as Quint in 'Jaws' but was unable to work due to tax problems (1975).
