He showed little interest in the rights of the American colonists until St. Johns Parish, where his plantation was located, threatened to secede from Georgia.
He organized an unsuccessful invasion of Florida.
He died from gangrene after being shot in a duel with a political rival.
He is known principally for having a rare and valuable autograph.

He wrote the original draft of the Georgia state constitution.
Gwinnett County, Georgia, was named for him.
