    Born in Balagny-sur-Therain, France
    Cubist and surrealist painter
Paintings include 'Pedestal Table in the Studio' (1922), 'Card Trick' (1923), 'The Four Elements' (1924), 'Battle of the Fishes' (1927), 'Sacrifices' (1936), 'Metamorphoses' (1939), 'Childbirth' (1955) and 'Star, Winged Being, Fish' (1955)
He would paint in an altered state of consciousness induced by drugs or by going long periods without food and sleep.
He would throw glue and sand against a canvas and make paintings based on the shapes that were formed.
One critic called him 'possibly the most consistent portrayer of cruel confrontations and bizarre combat in surrealism.'
He was badly wounded when he was shot in the chest during World War I.
During World War II, he and his Jewish wife escaped from France to the US.
His paintings and lectures while living in New York were an influence on Jackson Pollock and the Abstract Expressionist movement.
