Joppa was where Jonah fled to upon rejecting God’s call for him to travel to Nineveh.
Jaffa had been conquered by Egyptians, Crusaders, Mamluks, Ottomans, and Napoleon Bonaparte.
It was heavily bombed by Italy during World War II, which killed 137 people. (September 9, 1940)

Until the last quarter of the 20th Century, it was looked down upon for its unappealing, run-down buildings and humid climate.
Some of its Modernist buildings have been ruined through neglect.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews have compared the city to Sodom and Gomorrah for its hedonistic lifestyle.

It’s widely known as the ‘gay capital of the Middle East’ due to its openness to homosexuals.
It’s Israel’s greenest city due to its high environmental maintenance score.
It’s often known as ‘The City That Never Sleeps’ and ‘The Big Orange’.
With a very vibrant nightlife, it has gained a reputation as a party town.
