Why he might be annoying:

Hedda Hopper felt 'Citizen Kane' was an attack on Hearst and told him about the film. Hearst set out to protect his reputation, leading a group that attempted to purchase the negative to burn it.
Hearst supporters also used blackmail, smears and an FBI investigation to further their cause.
Some people accused him of pushing the U.S. into a war with Spain (1897-1898), to sell more papers.
He hated Mexicans.
It was rumored Hearst attempted to shoot Charlie Chaplin after catching him kissing Hearst's mistress Marion Davies, but hit and killed Thomas Ince.

Why he might not be annoying:

At his peak, he owned 28 major newspapers and 18 magazines.
He built a 280,000 acre ranch in San Simeon, California in the 1920s.
He was a staunch anti-Communist.
Orson Welles used him as inspiration for one of the greatest films of all time.
