One bio noted, ‘[He] .was a dependable character actor but he didn’t make a great impression on audiences until he became Charlie Chan.’
He was a Scottish actor known for portraying a Chinese detective.
Due to his failing health, his last few Charlie Chan films shifted much of their focus to ‘number two son’ Victor Sen Yung and comic relief Mantan Moreland.
He had a good enough voice to be cast as the lead baritone in an operatic stock company in New York.
His play ‘The Man They Left Behind’ was so popular thirteen different stock companies nationwide performed it during a single week.
He managed the difficult feat of taking over a role made famous by another actor and making it his own.
