He wrote under more than a dozen pen names, ranging from Laurajean Ermayne (for lesbian themed fiction) to the punning 'Dr. Acula.'
He called his home the Ackermansion and a collection of stories he edited an Ackermanthology.
He ticked off purists by popularizing the term sci-fi.
He claimed to have written the shortest-ever short story - a single letter.
He was the first science-fiction fan to attend a convention dressed in a costume.
Wikipedia and other sources prematurely reported him dead a month before it actually happened.

Stephen Spielberg told him, 'A generation of fantasy lovers thank you for raising us so well.'
Until ill health forced him to stop, every Saturday he would provide free tours of his sci-fi memorabilia to fans who stopped by his house.
He noted, 'My wife used to say, 'How can you let strangers into our home?' But what's the point of having a collection like this if you can't let people enjoy it?'
