Former journalist and trade union negotiator
Leader of the People’s National Party (1969-92)
Two-time Prime Minister of Jamaica (1972-80,1989-92)

Why he might be annoying:

He was married five times, divorced three times.
He succeeded his father as head of the People’s National Party.
His rivalry with Edward Seaga often turned bloody, with over 800 deaths from political-related violence in the 1980 election year.
He said capitalism needed to be ‘demolished brick by brick.’
He praised Fidel Castro as ‘a man of extraordinary political sophistication.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.
He was a compelling orator.
His government introduced free secondary education, a minimum wage, equal pay for women, and maternity leave.
When reggae artists recorded songs criticizing his policies, he quipped, ‘If anybody is going to protest against me, at least I want them to do it in style.’
During his second term, he softened his socialist rhetoric, openly advocating a role for private enterprise.
