Why he might be annoying
He underwent 3 serious arm surgeries during his career with the Mets, one of which cost him most of the 1997 and all of the 1998 season.
He broke his wrist while punching a trash can in the Mets' dugout.
In 1997, he stabbed himself in the thigh while opening a box with a kitchen knife.
Early in his career, he survived a 3 story fall and landed on his head, doctors said that his being drunk at the time probably saved his life.
His velocity dropped from 98mph to below 95 mph on his fastball for some unexplained reason while with the Cardinals.
His nickname is 'Izzy.'
Why he might not be annoying
He made the successful transition from starter to closer during his career.
He had a bout of tuberculosis while with the Mets.
Even though the velocity on his fastball isn't what it used to be, he remains one of the best closers in baseball.
He hit an RBI triple in a rare at-bat for the Cardinals.
He grew up a Cardinals fan.
He didn't pitch at all in high school.
He excelled in 3 sports in high school: football, basketball and baseball.
