    He describes his views on Israel as 'Freedland Zionism' (this meant that Jewish occupation “the 45-year long occupation is jeopardizing the founding Zionist goal of a Jewish, democratic state).
    His first thriller novel 'The Righteous Men' received scathing reviews.
    He can be a deadpan snarker at times.

    He was awarded the David Watt Prize for Journalism in 2008.
    In 1992, he was awarded Laurence Stern fellowship from 'The Washington Post.'
    Despite the scathing reviews, 'The Righteous Men' became a runaway bestseller in the UK.
