Event
    It spawned a Christmas movie.
It spawned a History Channel reboot.
It was parodied on Chappelle's Show and Family Guy.
O.J. Simpson made his acting debut on an episode.
Robert Reed/Mike Brady is the only one in the cast to be in all four episodes.
By far more people have seen the series than have ever read the book on which it was based.
ABC execs later admitted that episodes were aired in direct succession (rather than the usual one-per-week basis) to 'get it out of the way.'
The running joke at ABC was that it was a ratings bonanza only because: 'one third of America was snowed in, one third of America is black, and one third watches ABC anyway.'
More than 28 million viewers watched the first episode.
The series as a whole drew in 140 million collective households.
The final episode alone was watched by 100 million viewers.
It earned 37 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won nine.
It provided John Amos job security after his getting killed off on Good Times.
It is credited with single-handedly revitalizing the genealogy industry.
It provided an impetus for the funding of HBCUs and the creation of Black History month.
It showcased Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson.
It gave Sandy Duncan, Ralph Waite and Chuck Connors the chance to play against type as unsympathetic slave owners.
Somebody from PBS watching this saw young Kunta Kinte and got the idea that he would be the perfect host for Reading Rainbow (who knew?)
The finale remains the third-most watched single episode of all time, trailing only the final episode of M*A*S*H and the 'Who Shot J.R.?' episode of Dallas.
