    She suffered recurrent bouts of depression and contemplated suicide.
    Her first depression occurred at age nine after she developed an unrequited crush on her older brother.
    She had an affair with a patient.
    The American Institute of Psychoanalysis was often in turmoil from her habit of putting her lovers in key positions.
    She rejected Freud's ideas of penis envy, arguing that any envy women felt was justifiable envy of men's power in the world.
    She suggested that men have 'womb envy' over their inability to bear children and compensate through achievement in other fields.
    She wrote one of the first books on self-analysis.
