He is a man named 'Sherrill.'
He is reportedly arrogant and vain.
He complained when the Met refused to give him a new contract in 1997, even though he had lost his voice and retired nearly twenty years before.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had a rich, powerful voice.
He once got locked in an opera house bathroom during a performance.
When he was at his peak, a blood vessel in his throat hemorrhaged onstage.
Surgery to repair it badly damaged his voice, ending his career at a relatively young age.
Even though he usually played villains, the crowd often liked him better than the hero.
