Why he might be annoying:

He was married and divorced twice from Sally Ellis.
His fondness for sideshow freaks as characters prompted his wife to ask, 'You don't intend to make a career out of midgets, do you?'
His writing was often overshadowed by his persona as a self-destructive, hard-drinking hellraiser.
He said, 'I was drunk every day for thirty years.'
He awoke from one binge to discover a tattoo of a cabinet hinge on the inside of his elbow.
He said, 'Anybody who is going to defend much of the way I’ve spent my life is mad.'
He dedicated a book to Sean Penn.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was six, he was badly scalded on two thirds of his body when he fell into a cauldron of boiling water used to slough the skin off slaughtered hogs.
At seventeen, he joined the Marines, served three years, and went to college on the G.I. Bill.
His oldest son drowned in a neighbor's swimming pool.
The Washington Post's Jonathan Yardley praised his 'sense of humor that is totally off the wall.'
The New York Times noted that he 'attracted a cadre of fans so fiercely devoted that the phrase 'cult following' seems inadequate to describe their ardor.'
When Kim Gordon and Lydia Lunch collaborated, they named their band after him.
