Birth name was Li Shumeng
Stage name was Lan Ping
Married to People's Republic of China's Chairman Mao ZeDong (1939-76)
Arrested October 6, 1976 (27 days after ZeDong's death) for setting up militia coups in an attempt to seize power
Tried with three others (known as the Gang of Four) between 1981-82 for 'crimes against innocent people and subverting the government'
Sentenced to death - later commuted to life imprisonment
Died after hanging herself in her hospital room at age 77

Why she might be annoying:

ZeDong was her third husband, and she was his fourth wife.
She was arrested and imprisoned in 1933 for 'communist-front organization activities.'
Party leaders only agreed to her marriage of ZeDong if she stayed out of politics for 30 years.
It didn't happen, and in 1966 she helped incite the Red Guards into the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, dividing the party.
She had a hand in suppressing varieties of traditional cultural activities.
She refused treatment for throat cancer, but when she was hospitalized for an undisclosed ailment she killed herself.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her parents wanted nothing to do with her upbringing, and she was raised by her grandfather.
She was a moderately successful actress in China before marrying ZeDong.
She took a lot of the blame and heat for activities approved by ZeDong.
She was a key figure in helping defrost icy U.S.-China relations during the Nixon administration.
She famously defended herself during her trial by stating 'I was Chairman Mao's dog. Whomever he asked me to bite, I bit.'
Literature in the Western world often refers to her simply as Madame Mao.
