Why he might be annoying:

He was a child actor.
His acting career was predictably axed by the onset of puberty.
He gave his aspiring-actress wife Bonnie Jones a semi-regular role on his hit show (the two later divorced).
No matter what he ever did, his projects could not equal the near-unprecedented success of M*A*S*H.
He took issue with MGM studio heads removing a scene between himself and Frank Morgan discussing their Jewish heritage from 'The Mortal Storm' (it was done to avoid offending pre-War German audiences).

He his screen debut in a 1934 'Our Gang' short.
He was in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He avoided the child star curse by transitioning seamlessly to behind-the-scenes television work.
He wrote for and directed shows as diverse as My Three Sons, Leave it to Beaver, The Munsters, The Andy Griffith Show, and Hogan's Heroes.
He was nominated for twenty-four Emmy Awards and won six times.
He twice won the Directors Guild of America Award for for his work on M*A*S*H.
He met his second wife, actress Ann Sweeny, while working on M*A*S*H (she played Nurse Carrie Donovan in two episodes).
Although not a ratings titan, his show Lou Grant did receive critical praise and award recognition.
