    He started in musical theater, until he developed laryngitis during a tour of England.
    He was killed off in so many of his early films, he said he should have been named 'morticians' man of the year.'
    He had a collection of several hundred pipes.
    He said, 'I'd rather be a supporting actor than a star. Supporting actors last longer.'
    He and choreographer Kathryn Scott were married for 56 years until her death.
    He and Jane Wyman set the record for longest kiss in a Hollywood film: 3 minutes, 5 seconds in 'You're in the Army Now.'
    He was worried when Ronald Reagan (then Wyman's husband) approached him after the scene was filmed, until Reagan asked deadpan, 'How'd you ever get her to sit still for so long?'
