Politician

The Resume

    (April 9, 1931-April 26, 1991)
Born in Hartland, New Brunswick, Canada
Member of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick
    Premier of New Brunswick (1970-1987)
Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick (1967-1987)
Member of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly for Carleton (1961-1974) and Carleton Centre (1974-1987)
    Senator for New Brunswick (1990-1991)

Why he might be annoying:

He kept his homosexuality in the closet, but it wasn't made public until after his death.
He initially went to university aspiring to be a doctor, before opting to pursue a degree in law.
He was charged with marijuana possession after he had 26.5 grams in his luggage during the Royal Visit (1984).
After being acquitted of the charges, it was revealed that he supplied cocaine to other young men.
Many Canadian political insiders felt that the drug possession scandal tanked his popularity considerably.
In wake of his personal reputation falling apart, his party lost every seat in the 1987 New Brunswick general election.
He was nicknamed 'Disco Dick' as a result of his penchant for disco music.
He was called a 'faded pansy' by New Brunswick Liberal leader Joseph Daigle, which first drew speculation of his sexuality.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a second generation politician in the province, as his father served as the mayor of Hartwell.
He was named after former Canadian Prime Minister R. B. Bennett, and had the opportunity to meet him at a Progressive Conservative convention at the age of 7.
He took drama while attending Acadia University.
He served 27 years as premier of New Brunswick, which is a provincial record.
He was good friends with Truman Capote, and would often travel to New York City to visit the city's gay bar scene.
Contrary to many politicians, he was considered flamboyant, eccentric and full of personality.
When he realized that he was followed from Fredericton to New York City on one of his outings with Capote, he confronted the journalists by saying 'Fancy meeting you two fellas in place like this.'
