The Resume

    (1972- )
    Born in North London, England
    Documentary filmmaker
Won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for 'Amy,' which focuses on the life of singer Amy Winehouse (2016)
Best known for directing the award-winning documentary feature, 'Senna,' based on the life of Formula One driver Ayrton Senna (2010)
Also directed 'The Sheep Thief' (1997), 'The Warrior' (2001), 'The Return' (2006), 'Far North' (2007), 'Ali' (2016), 'Nino' (2016), and 'Maradona' (2018)

Why he might be annoying:

He was threatened with litigation by Amy Winehouse's family, specifically the father - Mitch Winehouse - who claimed his documentary cast them in a negative light.
Mitch continued to be critical of the documentary even after it won the Oscar, tweeting: 'I am not changing my stance .... It's a negative, spiteful, and misleading depiction of Amy. We will fix this.'
Similar complaints had been submitted about his 'Senna' documentary by Alain Prost, who claimed that the film omitted his reconciliation with Ayrton in order to cast him as 'the villain' (ironically, Mitch Winehouse had personally chosen Kapadia to direct his daughter's documentary after watching 'Senna').
His documentary chronicling the everyday life of Cristiano Ronaldo was panned so severely that it scored a measly 17% on Rotten Tomatoes (many critics dismissing it as a fan love letter to its subject).
When asked about filming on location in the deserts of Rajasthan for 'The Warrior' he nonchalantly responded: 'The crew suffered the odd illness along the way; dehydration, sunstroke, heat-stroke, malaria, dysentery, scorpion stings, being bitten by rabid dogs, the usual kind of thing' (yeah, no biggie!)

Why he might not be annoying:

His favorite movie is 'Raging Bull.'
He grew up in a Muslim family in London.
He started out filming short subjects on the man who ran a local pizzeria in his neighborhood.
His debut film, 'Sheep Thief,' won Second Prize in the Cinefondation section of the 1998 Cannes International Film Festival.
'The Warrior' received the BAFTA Award for Best British Film of 2003.
'Senna' became the highest grossing British documentary up to that point (at nearly 3.2 million poinds, or $5.2 million).
'Senna' was nominated for three BAFTA awards, winning Best Documentary and Best Editing, as well as being nominated for Best British Film (a rare feat for a documentary).
His films have been praised for being both visually appealing and probing of its subjects (that they also tend to be box office successes doesn't much hurt either).
