She dropped out of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts claiming 'There was no teaching' there.
A friend said, 'She is entirely too slashing, snubs all modern art, disdains all the names we are used to revere.'
Although famous in France, she received little recognition in America during her lifetime, and even within her family, she was overshadowed by her brother Alexander, the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
She overcame parental objections to both becoming a professional artist and to moving to France.
She was the only American invited to exhibit with the Impressionists.
She had to stop painting after developing cataracts.
She was awarded the French Legion of Honor (1904).
