    (January 10, 1908-January 16, 1981)
Born in London, England, United Kingdom
Portrayed M in the James Bond films from 'Dr. No (1962)' to 'Moonraker (1979)'
Other film credits include 'The Third Man' (1949), 'The Blue Lamp' (1950), 'Beat the Devil' (1953), 'The Battle of the River Plate' (1956), 'The Spanish Gardener' (1956), 'Web of Evidence' (1959), 'Whistle Down the Wind' (1961) and 'The L-Shaped Room' (1962)
    Grandfather of Jonny Lee Miller
Died of stomach cancer at age 73
He died while making preparations to reprise his role as M for the Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only.'
He shares his name with a professional poker player.
He went missing during the filming of 'The Third Man' and the director sent crew members out to search for him in the local bars.
He was typecast as authority figures, including army sergeants, police detectives and, of course, M.
He portrayed an M-like secret service chief in the cheesy Bond knockoff 'Operation Kid Brother (1967),' which starred Sean Connery's younger sibling Neil.
He was the first man to portray M in the Bond films.
He was a friend of Judi Dench, who later on became the first woman to portray M.
His film acting career spanned over 40 years.
During the filming of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service,' George Lazenby accidentally knocked him into a fence, cutting his leg.
No doctor was available, so a local vet stitched up the gash.
He and Desmond Lleweyn (Q) were the only Bond actors to neither quit nor get fired, being replaced only because of their deaths.
