    (1776-August 1843)
    Birth name is George Gist

Fought with the Cherokee in a war against the Creek Redsticks (1813-1814)
Invented the Cherokee syllabary (alphabet), composed of 85 unique glyphs (1821)
His birth date is listed anywhere from 1760 to 1776.

Nobody is sure where he is buried.
His father abandoned the family when Sequoyah was just a child.
He worked on his syllabary patiently for over 12 years.
His invention allowed the Cherokee to communicate easier with the white men.
The Sequoia tree is named after him.
He was the first person in history to create a written language on his own.
