    It lost out to Raleigh when the state capital was chosen.
    Over 600 buildings were destroyed in its 'Great Fire.' (1831)
    In the 1960s, its main drag, Hay Street, was dominated by strip clubs and bars catering to Ft. Bragg's soldiers.
    Its temperature reached 110 F, the highest ever recorded in North Carolina (August 21, 1983).
    It was struck by an F3 tornado, destroying 150 homes, during the state's largest tornado outbreak (April 16, 2011).
