    He was parodied in Evelyn Waugh's novel 'The Loved One' and as Commander McBragg in the Tennessee Tuxedo cartoons.
    While prospecting for gold in South Africa, he developed pneumonia and was wrongly pronounced dead (1889).
    He was married to Isabelle Wood for over fifty years until his death.
    He was knighted for his contributions to Anglo-American friendship (1944).
