His co-headlining tour with fellow hard-living honky-tonker Hank Williams caused one writer to quip 'some of the towns they played have never been the same.'
He explained his distinctive singing style with 'I'm not really a lazy guy, but I get tired of holding notes for a long time.'
His producer said, 'He was never on time for a session and sometimes didn't show at all.'
He refused to take medication for his high blood pressure because it would interfere with his drinking, which contributed to his death from a stroke at an early age.
In 1951, he held the #1 spot on the country chart for 26 weeks.
He was the first country singer to perform at the Hollywood Bowl.
Merle Haggard called him 'the most unique thing to happen to country music.'
His relaxed singing style was an influence on Haggard, George Jones, Roy Orbison and Randy Travis.
Willie Nelson recorded the album 'To Lefty From Willie' as a tribute to him.
