Why he might be annoying:

He said, 'My career is one of the few that started at the absolute top and worked its way down.'
He noted about his repeated denials after 'Death in Venice' of being gay, 'I kept having to say no, no, which makes me sound desperate or prejudiced.'
He tried to downplay his pretty boy image by refusing parts that played up his looks.
He complained when Germaine Greer used a picture of him on the cover of her 2003 book 'The Beautiful Boy.' (Greer had gotten permission from photographer David Bailey, who held the copyright on the image.)

He was raised by his maternal grandparents after his mother committed suicide when he was ten.
His arrival in Japan triggered a hysteria compared to Beatlemania.
He was an inspiration for the bishonen (beautiful boy) subgenre of anime.
His son Elvin died of sudden infant death syndrome at nine months of age (1986).
He became a professional musician, touring with a dance band.
