Her father proved reluctant to support her traveling to the Miss USA pageant held in Miami, fearing she'd face racial attacks.

She was the second black woman to compete at Miss USA, the first being Ohio's Corinne Huff in 1960.
She was Idaho's first ever semi-finalist
She received none of the prizes and gifts previous Misses Idaho won.
She later became a much-lauded teacher in Los Angeles.
